Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) urge Malaysia Government to reconsider the opening of cinemas.

Despite the announcement of the reopening of several economic sectors including non-essential services like spas, gyms, casinos, and recreational fishing, cinemas across Malaysia are still forced to remain closed throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO), which is now expected to continue until 4th March 2021. In other neighbouring and developed countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, and Japan, cinemas have been permitted to operate. India, which has just reopened its cinemas today, has also done so at 100% capacity. The forced closure of movie theatres is crippling the Malaysian cinema industry, which has already lost up to 90% of revenue year-on-year and more than RM500 million in total losses incurred in the year 2020 alone. It is a stark contrast compared with previous years, where the industry has collectively contributed over RM1.08 billion in income and over RM250 million in entertainment tax duties to the country.Long-term closure , Long-term effectsWith the continued closures, Malaysian cinemas will have been partially or fully closed for nearly a year since the first MCO in March 2020. These forced shutdowns have gravely impacted the industry, resulting in countless job losses, permanent closures of cinema locations, and a significant downsizing of operations for all exhibitors across the board. In some instances, cinema employees have even received extensive pay cuts of up to 70%. By far, the biggest loss, however, has been the exit of the country’s third largest exhibitor, MBO Cinemas, which has been forced into voluntary liquidation. In totality, over 25% of cinema screens all over the country have been permanently shuttered due to the long-term closures. This is no longer just a crisis for the cinema industry; it is evolving into a financial catastrophe that is likely to affect thousands of jobs across a larger supply chain, which serves the entire trade from end- to-end including smaller organisations in manufacturing, logistics, cleaning, F&B, and retail, among others. The collapse of the cinema industry is also estimated to directly impact the livelihoods of the larger local Malay film industry, where over 20,000 Malaysians are currently employed in filmmaking and production, creatives, distribution, talent, and much more."As a local filmmaker, we have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has staggered the productions of three films including Abang Long Fadil 3, Polis Evo 3, and Mat Kilau, in which we have already invested more than RM20 million to produce. Furthermore, strict SOPs enforced on the creative industry have also further impacted all artists and performers involved. The Government must address this situation before it gets worse. The losses incurred by cinema operators since the implementation of the first MCO in 2020 until today must also be taken into account. The paralysis of the cinema industry is not impossible, but should it happen, it would be difficult to recover," said Datuk Dr. Yusof Haslam, Skop Productions.MAFE has made several concerted appeals for assistance to the Government via Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN), Kementerian Kewangan Malaysia (MOF) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Chiefly among the requests made are for an exemption or reduction of entertainment taxes for exhibitors.Although RM225 million was allocated to fund and support the arts, culture, and entertainment in June 2020, this allocation did not include cinemas. The 2021 Budget tabled in November later allocated RM100 million as a booster for the creative industry, but cinemas were once again exempted from this aid. To date, cinema operators have not yet obtained any other form of financial or stimulus packages from the total RM325 million that has been set aside for the creative industry by the Government.“Given the allowances for certain non-essential industries to reopen over the last few weeks, we believe consumers are beginning to see the discrepancy in which businesses can reopen and which cannot. The cinema industry cannot sustain closure for much longer and it will undoubtedly collapse, affecting the livelihoods of every Malaysian serving across the entire supply chain. We hope that the Government will seriously reconsider their decision to allow us to reopen,” said General (Rtd) Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Mohd Ghazali Dato’ Mohd Seth, Chairman of MAFE.Cinemas are the safest form of out-of-home entertainmentSource :  GSCinemas Facebook PageSource : TGVCinemas Facebook PageSince the beginning of the pandemic, cinema operators have followed an established set of stringent SOP guidelines from authorities, which includes mandatory contact tracing, temperature checks, and social distancing. Additionally, exhibitors have invested into thorough and frequent sanitation after every show, personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff, as well as the provisions of alcohol hand rubs for customers. Even while cinemas are closed, operators also continue daily maintenance of seats and equipment; expenditures that are becoming too overwhelming to bear without income.Despite its best efforts, movie theatres have not been allowed to operate, although no COVID-19 clusters have ever been discovered to have originated from the cinema. This is further supported by a study conducted by Celluloid Junkie in October 2020, where it was reported that no COVID-19 clusters have ever been traced back to cinemas on the global level as well. With no mingling allowed in halls and the application of gap seating, each hall’s capacity has been effectively reduced to less than 50%, enabling little to no physical contact amongst patrons. MAFE thus seeks an allowance from authorities to let families from the same household sit together side-by-side, with a single seat gap between every two seats, which is currently in practice by cinemas in Singapore where infections remain low. This is also in line with the recent relaxation of SOPs for dining, which does not enforce a limit on the number of people if they are seated 1-metre apart from each other.More than just an entertainment hub, cinemas also play an important role in the cultural development of the nation. In times of distress, it provides the audiences an affordable and safe venue for escapism, as with other leisurely activities like casinos, spas, group exercises at gyms, and individual sports such as golf. With movie-goers following the SOPs and the little contact they have with other patrons, movie-going is no doubt one of the safest out-of-home entertainment places to be.#ReopenCinemas #BringCinemasBack

Love Alarm Season 2 Character Posters Released

Here comes a love that will make you want to cry!“I told him for the first time that I like him”Netflix has unveiled five posters of memorable quotes from the characters of Love Alarm season 2, which picks up four years after the creation of the Love Alarm app that rings when you are within a 10 meter radius of someone you like or are the object of someone’s liking. The five characters show their feelings on their posters using their own lines from the show. Jo-jo, who is unable to communicate her mind because she has a placed block on her “Love Alarm,” reveals her innermost thoughts, saying, "I told him for the first that I like him," which raises questions about who she is confessing this to. Hye-young, despite having an unresponsive alarm, says, “Whether that thing rings or not, it doesn’t matter to me,” expressing his deeper feelings toward Jojo. Sun-oh, saying “From now on, I’ll trust only what your eyes tell me” to distance himself, still shows Jo-jo affection, foreshadowing a more intense love triangle. Gul-mi, who is trying to enter the “Love Alarm” club, says “Who, me? Why? What about me, exactly?” and seems to be unable to hide her embarrassment. Yuk-jo, who is dating Sun-oh but knows Sun-oh still has lingering feelings for Jo-jo, says “I know that feeling of a burning heat. How can I beat that?” and relates to everyone who has ever experienced unrequited love. The shape of the ring, which shows slightly different variations depending on the character, seeks to catch the eye. The attention will be focused on the expanded story of Season 2, which will show a darker triangle romance and a more diverse form of life and love in a world that has changed so much since the launch of the “Love Alarm.”Love Alarm Season 2, which shows the inner feelings of five people, will be released March 12th exclusively on Netflix in over 190 countries around the world.

Like any other year, they look forward to celebrate Chinese New Year with their families, friends and visitors with much joy and anticipation. Our funds have also been impacted throughout the duration of the pandemic, thus, in such challenging times, I am very grateful that companies such as MAGGI® paid attention to the needs of this segment of society, who are often overlooked. Experienced players behind film investment and production company Longhouse Films a driving force in putting ‘Made in Malaysia’ on the world map

There is a film investment and production company made up of well-versed international level players and they are in full force to live up to their motto, "Proudly Produced in Malaysia by Malaysians for the World".After making his name in China’s movie industry where he spent 23 years, the time is ripe for Sarawak-born Jon Chiew to lend his expertise to the Malaysian film industry, leading him to set up Longhouse Films, an integrated film investment and production company that has set its sights on the region and beyond.Founded in 2019, Longhouse Films derives its’ name from the communal village house that is native to Sarawak, signifying different characters playing an important role under one roof, as reflected in Longhouse’s own company structure.Jon, who has worked with major studios like 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures, is poised to lead his team in taking the Malaysian scene to greater heights on par with international standards. The founder and CEO has been involved in 20 films and counting, including producing China’s 2018 box office hit “Hello Mr. Billionaire” that raked in over 2.5 billion yuan (RM1,550,000,000).Another key person to Longhouse Films is their managing director, Dianne Tan, a corporate figure turned showbiz maestro with multi-disciplinary experiences who is responsible for enhancing the studio’s intellectual property rights, distribution networks, investments, and brand management.Longhouse Films may be a new kid on the block, but in just a short amount of time since its establishment, the experienced team behind the subsidiary of MLabs System Bhd is already occupied with a line-up of ongoing and upcoming projects. They will be working alongside director Adrian Teh, known for the 2018 blockbuster Paskal: The Movie, for his upcoming action film Bakara, which begins shooting in June this year and will make its way to theatres in the United States and China upon completion in summer of 2022.Longhouse Films is also involved in the investment and production of Ada Hutan, the directorial debut of Hairul Azreen which stars Zahiril Adzim; The Assistant featuring Syamsul Yusof and Hairul Azreen, as well as Malaysia’s sitcom My Ofis. All these productions aim to get into the market in 2021.In the new normal, Longhouse Films, as the distributor, has managed to host the Malaysian premiere of the Zhang Yimou-produced Chinese anthology film My People, My Homeland, which commemorates China’s 71st anniversary and was China’s second highest grossing film of 2020. The premiere served as a medium of cultural exchange between Asean and China against the backdrop of COVID-19.On the global front, Longhouse Films is the distributor of “Monkey King: A Hero's Journey to the West,” which is slated for release in May this year. Produced by Jon Chiew, the animated film is directed by former Disney animator Chris Bradley with Marvel Studio character designer Walter A. McDaniel as art director.Other productions in the pipeline include a Korean idol chasing romcom “Transit Tour”, and Chinese animation “The Legend of Er Lang” with distribution rights secured for the series adaptation of the best-selling Chinese novel by Ning Hangyi, “Foul of the Game Must Be Series,” as well as a romance series set in 1980s China, “Dear Mayang Street.”Longhouse Films is also set to work on several upcoming titles, including one of the most anticipated movie sequel of “Hello Mr. Billionaire” which is set to be released in 2022, “Hello Mr. Actor” starring well-known Chinese actor Shen Teng. The long list of works is a testament to Longhouse Films’ capacity and capability to advance the development of the film industry in Malaysia onto the international stage. Having accumulated years of industry experience abroad, Jon and Dianne are well connected with industry players across the world, especially China, the world's largest movie market. This gives them an edge to introduce Malaysian content and talent to the international audience that would give rise to popularising Malaysian culture abroad. For more info, visit their website HERE or on Facebook and Instagram.
